What are Stoneware Dishes?

Stoneware is a type of ceramic dish set that is named after its dense, stone-like quality. It is more thick and opaque than other types of ceramic dish sets such as earthenware and porcelain. A vitreous (glass-like) material is added to the clay to gives it extra strength. The vitreous glaze makes stoneware waterproof, unlike earthenware. It can be finished with a variety of glaze textures including matte, satin, or shiny.

Qualities of Stoneware

While stoneware should not be exposed to sudden or extreme temperatures changes, most stoneware can go in the freezer, oven, dishwasher, and microwave. However, check with the manufacturer before exposing your stoneware to these conditions.

What are Stoneware Dishes Made of?

Stoneware dishes are made of natural stoneware clay or non-refractory fire clay. These dishes also include small particles of kaolinite, mica, and quartz. Stoneware clay often has impurities such as carbon or iron which gives the finished product a dark color. If the manufacturer wishes to keep this color, they can apply a transparent glaze. Otherwise, they can apply a colored glaze. Once glazed, the clay is fired at high temperatures, usually between 2,012-2,372 degrees fahrenheit. The dishes can be fired once or twice. Twice-firing is used to create a higher quality glaze finish.
